Sleep Monitoring

The market is full with technologies that claim to collect proficient sleep measurements despite a severe lack of independent evaluations. A recent study by Stone et al. (2020), evaluated the accuracy of 8 commercial sleep technologies during in-home sleeping conditions.

The devices that were compared were:

  • Apple Watch Series 3

  • Beddit Sleep Monitor 3.0

  • Fatigue Science Readiband

  • Fitbit Ionic

  • Garmin Vivosmart 4

  • 2nd generation Oura smart ring

  • Polar A370

  • WHOOP Strap 2.0

The authors found that the Fitbit Ionic wrist device and the Oura Smart Ring had the lowest degrees of error for total sleep time, total wake time, and sleep efficiency, resulting in the lowest absolute percent error values. However, WHOOP reported the most accurate results for light and deep sleep durations.
